At home with Judith! Back at the beach she calls home, Papakura MP and Maraetai resident Judith Collins took a quick breather with the PC Times this week as she refocuses on her campaign, after falling prey to the Dirty Politics scandal. Judith Collins who lives at Maraetai Beach with her husband David Wong Tung, stood down as Minister of Justice last Saturday after months of accusations, allegations, leaked communications, and a starring role in the Nicky Hager book Dirty Politics. Firmly ensconced in her happy corner at Maraetai Beach’s Bach’n Café, Judith remains resolute in her determination to firstly keep hold of the Papakura seat which she has held for National for 12 years, and to clear her name. The liberation of being able to manage a regular election campaign without the intensifying pressure for resignation is not lost on her, and her energy for that task is undiminished. “I am really happy to be home,” is Judith’s initial sentiment, grateful for her support from Maraetai, Papakura and beyond. “My husband and I have been coming down here every weekend to have a coffee and looking at the beach it makes us grateful for what we have.” “The biggest job I have right now is answering my support emails. I have a stack of them, it’s incredible to think that this has brought out yet more people who want to help with the campaign.” “These things bring out the worst in people and the best, this is a great time of learning who your friends are and by God do I know who my friends are,” she says. Judith still counts Blogger Cameron Slater, accused of assisting her with alleged corrupt practices, within her circle of friends but counters his television assertion that “Judith always gives back double.” “He does exaggerate, that’s how he communicates,” she laughs. “I don’t give back double, I am simply going to stand my ground and not budge because I have not done anything wrong at all. I am not giving an inch on this. I can do that from my base in the electorate where I am from, with the people who have elected me.” Judith says she not only welcomes an enquiry into all Dirty Politics but actually requested it, thus creating the vacancy in the Justice Portfolio, which she had held since the last election, previously being Minister of Police. “I said to the Prime Minister we really need an enquiry into this but I had to stand down for that to take place. I want the enquiry because I will be exonerated and I will be cleared - I am one hundred percent that I have done nothing wrong.” It is her hope that the New Zealand Police will be involved in the upcoming enquiry. “I think they will find the people who have stolen

these communications. I think that they will find out who else has been involved, who has funded it and they will take action.” Meanwhile, her Papakura office is open for business and Judith is positive about what she can offer her electorate should she again be successful in this month’s general election. “This is going to mean I spend more time on the ground doing grassroots work which I love. I am very happy being elected as the MP for Papakura and I am looking forward to being an even better MP. “I can have more clinic time. I know that I have done an awful lot for my electorate; now that I have been a Minister I know how the system works to get better delivery of services I can be even more effective for the people of Papakura.” The besieged yet resolute MP is not ready to give up on Maraetai, Papakura or clearing her name. “I am not going to budge an inch, I am staying right here for my vindication.”

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (September 5th 2014)

Time to consider long term answers to erosion THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz The Maraetai beachfront has been a hive of activity this past week or so as Auckland Council contractors fix all the recent storm damage. The wharf is being repaired along with the wooden seawall. The foreshore behind the wall is being patched up. The wharf repairs will, hopefully, fix the damage from two storms – given that damage from the initial storm still hadn’t been fixed when the second one struck. The bad news, however, is that the work is literally a fix: it doesn’t seem to address the long term threat to the beach and adjacent road. Of course, we may go another 10 years before we get another “100 year” storm, during which time the beach and foreshore may be perfectly fine. Or we may not. And judging by the weather patterns of recent times I’m betting on the latter. The Pohutukawa Coast Community Association is talking of holding a public meeting to discuss the foreshore erosion problem. That’s a very good idea and I hope they would also encourage Beachlands, Kawakawa Bay and Orere Pt residents so come along because it’s a problem

that affects all these communities to some extent. There are some good ideas out there. There’s the sand dune planting option which has certainly worked well down country while the experimental planning at the eastern end of Maraetai Beach has shown encouraging results. There’s the use of man-made groynes and judging from the example at Whitford Pt, Kawakawa Bay, there is evidence that this method can also work.

ABOVE: A new pile is driven into the sand as part of the repairs to storm-damaged Maraetai Wharf.

Then there is Len Lavas and his thumping great seawall. The article on our front page a couple of weeks ago met with some scepticism as some people suggested that Len had a vested interest in making sure his option gets the nod. Well, of course he does. His company builds seawalls. But that doesn’t mean he’s wrong. In my view, all the above options have their merits and it’s time we put all these ideas on the table. I’m sure it would be useful from Auckland Council’s point of view – and especially our Franklin Local Board – to know what local residents’ thoughts are, and especially the long-time residents who have studied the impact of the weather on our beaches over a period of decades. It will all come down to money. But if the people of Maraetai can show a clear preference on a particular course of action, then at least that’s a start. It may help prod into action a council that seems to think Auckland City ends at Newmarket. Take, for example, the report in the New Zealand Herald that the Council plans to spend $40 million fixing the seawall between Princes and Queens wharves in downtown Auckland because it could fail in a moderate earthquake. This in spite of the fact the Council admits the earthquake risk is low (last time there was a major earthquake in Auckland, anyone?), and that the wall currently poses no physical threat to anyone.

Thank you, Mr Walton (PC Times letters August 22) for your interesting portrayal of Maraetai as it used to be and the changes that have occurred over the years. There is a another major contributing factor to the beach’s current situation that I have learnt from discussions with a geologist. Although there is a superficial layer of sand on a beach created by shells, the dominant contributor to a sandy beach is nearby cliffs. As the sandstone cliffs erode the resultant sand builds up on a beach in close proximity. Certainly humans contribute to the recession of a sandy beach but our contribution is more likely to come from our building of roads around the bottom of cliffs, stopping storm water runoff and the prevention of cliff erosion which prevents

PINE HARBOUR MARINA (next to the Jolly Roger Pub), 190 Jack Lachlan Drive, BEACHLANDS

the constant renewal of sand. Another source of beach sand can be from far away. It may have been deposited there eons ago when the structure of the land was quite different. If you look north up the East Coast you will find that the beach sand there was washed from the volcanic plateau by the Waikato River when the river mouth was in the Firth of Thames rather than exiting on the west coast as it does now. A cliff face is a work in progress; it will con-

tinue to erode by stint of weather and sea action until it reaches a natural angle of repose. Until it reaches that gentler angle it will continue to contribute to the nearby sandy beaches if allowed to do so. Certainly Mr Walton’s view is valid, and it is fascinating to hear how the beach once looked, but it is man’s decisions in roadmaking and erosion prevention that have made the big difference. Tree a hazard We were appalled the other day turning from Karaka Rd into Shelly Bay Rd (Beachlands) as we do everyday – taking pleasure in seeing the bay spread below – to be confronted by a rather straggly type of spruce tree blocking the view. The roundabout is busy enough at peak times without the hazard of any tree, let alone a really ugly one that left to grow would become a visual obstacle to traffic and completely spoil what is really the entrance to Beachlands. Please can this be removed as everyone I have spoken to are equally as appalled ROSE MORGAN Beachlands The editor replies: I agree totally. Eventually the tree will make it diffcult to see approaching traffic. Then there will be ratepayers’ money spent on keeping it pruned. I’m all for beautifying roundabouts but let’s not lose sight of what they are for: providing safe entry and exit through intersections. THE BIBLE SAYS: But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve...But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. (Joshua 24:15)

New roads for Maraetai Maraetai has two new road names. Herbert Pollard Drive and Te Makuru Lane have been approved by the Franklin Local Board and will be in the new Maraetai School Rd subdivision. Subdivision developer, The Neil Group Limited, propsoed the two names after consultation with the Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki Tribal Trust and the Beachlands, Maraetai & Districts Historical Society. ‘Herbert Pollard’ was selected from a list of early land owners and family names associated with the area. Herbert Pollard was a key figure in the community, purchasing land in the 1920s, and was responsible for the development of the Maraetai Beach Estate. He also began planting of the Whitford Forest. Te Watene Te Makuru was significant to early sales of which this subdivision is a part of and to the Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki Tribal Trust in representing them in the Fairburn Purchase in 1836 in their attempts to hold on to their land.

Bike ace in Beachlands Motorcycle ace Andrew Stroud and an example of the Britten motorbike he helped make famous will be in Beachlands this weekend. Andrew and the Britten will be the star attractions at a ‘blokes weekend” being organised by Beachlands Baptist Church. On Saturday at 7.30pm there will be a “blokes evening” with a light supper. Andrew will then speak and those attending can examine the Britten motorbike close-up. The evening costs $15 and is at the Baptist Church, Third View Ave. And, yes, ladies are also welcome! Then on Sunday, there will be a “blokes” church service at 10am at the Baptist church where Andrew will again be guest speaker. Says Wikipedia: “Andrew Stroud started racing in 1986 and won his first championship in 1988 in the NZ 250 Production class. He then raced at Bathurst where he finished second in the 1988 Arai 500 km Superbike race. “In 1988, he raced in the US Endurance series and the Suzuka 8 Hours. For the next 10 years he competed internationally, riding for various Superbike and Grand Prix teams. “He first rode the New Zealand-built Britten V1000 at Daytona in 1992 where the bike stopped with a couple of laps remaining. “However, he won both Daytona races in 1994 on the Britten bike while setting the fastest top speed recorded by any motorcycle at Daytona (189 mph or 305 kph). “One of the few people to have had the privilege of racing one of John Britten’s superbikes, Stroud won the Battle-ofthe-Twins at Daytona on Britten superbikes in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998... “Stroud has competed in 41 World Superbike races, 20 FIM 500 GP races, 4 Suzuka 8 Hours races, 1 Isle of Man race and 3 24 hours World endurance races. “Stroud’s first superbike national championships was in 1988. He repeated this in 1995 and 1998 (riding a Britten V1000) and, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 (latterly the GSXR1000K9), in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2010. In 2011 Stroud became national champion for the last time.” Stroud announced his retirement from motorcycle racing in August 2013.

6 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (September 5th 2014)

Over the next two issues of the PC Times, editor Duncan Pardon interviews candidates standing for election in the Hunua electorate....

Four priorities for National candidate

Andrew Bayly may have already fought his most difficult election battle. As the National Party candidate for Hunua, Andrew seems certain to inherit the rock-solid National seat from retiring MP Dr Paul Hutchison. Nor surprisingly, it took

someone with an impressive CV to hold off stiff competition put up by the nine other people wanting to be the next National candidate for Hunua. Andrew and his wife have lived at Karaka for the past 10 years. They have three boys. Andrew initially trained as an accountant before joining one of New Zealand’s premier banks. He was seconded to London and for a period of five years worked on some of the world’s largest privatisations at that time as well as listing many companies on the London Stock Exchange. After returning to New Zealand, he wanted to work for himself and cofounded an Australasianbased strategic advisory firm that lists governments, local authorities, and Australasian corporates among its clients. The company’s multidisciplinary teams deliver projects across the health, infrastructure, property, food and agriculture, economic development and tertiary sectors. Andrew has also been the chair and a director of several companies. He is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management, NZ Chartered Institute of

Corporate Management and the UK Chartered Association of Certified Accountants. With his twin brother, he has owned a hill country farm and a range of other businesses, including an award-winning composting and recycling environmental business at Pukekohe that services horticulturalists and orchardists. He is also an adventurer. He has been a Territorial officer in the New Zealand Army and the British Parachute Regiment. On his return he took up adventure running and has completed three Coast to Coast races. As he got older he turned to mountaineering and has climbed the highest mountain in New Zealand (Mt Cook) and Antarctica (Vinson Masiff). He has also pulled a sled to the South Pole. Now he is looking for an adventure in politics and admits he is enjoying the intellectual challenge of running a campaign. He already has an impressive track record having run the 1996 campaign for Belinda Vernon in Maungakeikei helping her turn a 3000 Labour majority into a National seat. He has been an electorate chairman and a regional councillor for National. But this is the first time he has been a candidate. “I live in this electorate and my family and business is here. My wife is treasurer of the

It’s the only seat I’m interested in standing for,” he says. Andrew has four priorities as electorate candidate for Hunua. “Firstly, I want to get the infrastructure we deserve. We’ve just seen an accident on Whitford Rd while driving here today, so I’m well aware of the need to improve roads, and access for school kids,” says Andrew. “There’s a lack of bus services – none at the weekend – and I’ve already spoken to the new ferry owner [Sealink].” As part of his infrastructure priority, Andrew is already facilitating a group of Beachlands-Maraetai business and community leaders to come up with a strategic plan for the future of the district. Second priority for Andrew is promoting the farming and equestrian industry in Hunua – particularly equestrian which he believes has a

lot of untapped potential. “Thirdly I plan to be a fierce advocate for making sure we get the health services we need provided locally. “There is a move towards integrated family area health centres. In Beachlands we have a doctors’ hub but as the area grows we will need other services – such as a radiologist – on the same site.” “And fourthly, I want to help create opportunities for businesses to flourish. “One way to create new jobs is to create great communities. If you do, CEOs and business owners start to live here and that’s when they start creating jobs around them.” Andrew has door knocked 10,000 homes and says “at the end of the day people want a sound economy; they want to see growth, jobs, and earn decent money to afford the housing and so on that comes with it.”

Maraetai’s Mardi ‘lived for others’

The recent passing of Mardi Mills will leave a huge gap in the Maraetai community. Mardi (93) had lived at Maraetai for 39 years, moving from Tokoroa when her husband Cecil (Ces) became manager of the Manurewa branch of the ANZ Bank. She died on August 8 having spent the past few months in a rest home. Mardi and Ces were both very active in the community but Ces died suddenly in 1986 aged

only 64 years. That prompted Mardi to become even more involved with local community groups. She joined the local theatre group and renewed her interest in acting, having as a child performed in radio plays for Auckland 1ZB. She was involved in a large number of different groups including the Beachlands-Maraetai Social Club organising events and trips for the elderly (many a lot

older than herself), was vice-president of the local Grey Power, a life member of the Country & Variety Music Club, librarian at the Maraetai Library, did Meals on Wheels, and was a Middlemore Hospital Red Cross Blue Lady in the Accident & Emergency ward for over 35 years until aged 90. All these contributed to her award as New Zealand Senior Achiever in 2000. Her church community

was always important to her and her association with the Clevedon Anglican Parish, then the Maraetai Church, goes back over 50 years. Mardi made many friends and had been a special carer to many who have passed away before her. “She always lived as a servant to others and didn’t feel her day had been fulfilled unless she had done something for someone else,” says son Chris.

POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (September 5th 2014) 7

“Even in the rest home in her last few months she was always worrying about others and making sure they were okay.” Mardi had three children – Ann, Bruce and Chris – 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. The Maraetai Anglican Church is holding a remembrance service for Mardi at 2pm on Saturday September 13. RIGHT: Mardi Mills.

Young Labour candidate hopes to bring out young voters

worked. So I did, and kept up that involvement through my university days and as [Auckland University] student union president.” Arena has worked for Labour in a number of campaigns – the Ikaroa Rawhiti and Te Tai Tokerau byelections, and the Tamaki Makaurau general election campaign. Prior to that, she helped put up hoardings for David Cunliffe in his electorate! Now the Clarks Beach resident is a first time election candidate, and still getting asked the age question. “How old I am is a question I often get asked. I got asked that

It seemed an impolite question to ask Hunua Labour Party candidate Arena Williams, but I couldn’t help myself: “How old are you, if you don’t mind my asking?” The answer is 24 but even more surprisingly, Arena is already a political veteran. She’s been involved with Labour since age 15. “I got involved around the time Labour passed the foreshore and seabed bill; it was about reacting to the way a policy had been pushed through quickly and without a lot of consultation with the people affected,” says Arena. “I really wanted to help change the way it

recently at a Pukekohe Rotary meeting so I turned the question around to ask ‘why aren’t more young people involved in politics?’ I hope by being involved myself I can get more young people – at least in Hunua – interested in wanting to vote.” Arena may be contesting the fifth safest National Party seat in the country with little realistic chance of winning, but she is applying all her time and energy to the task. “I quit my job at the BNZ [she has a B.Com/ LLB degree] and wanted to do this full time. To do justice to a huge electorate like this you need to, so I’ve been at it for a few months now.” So just what is the message Arena wants to get across to those Hunua residents she talks to on their doorsteps? “This Labour Government will be absolutely focused on regional debt and housing, two policies Hunua will benefit from. I’m passionate about pathways for young people through work and getting them into home ownership.

“We have an ideal in Franklin and surrounding areas about home ownership and how it gives you a stake in the community. We value the stability that comes with people, having something invested in their local area. Declining home ownership in an area like this with more people renting, then inevitably you lose that stability and sense of community. Being able to offer young people, a pathway into their own home is really important – and not just those individuals and families. “Under Labour we will see a concerted effort to stop house price inflation as a result of foreign investment, and also through building 100,000 new homes – mostly in Auckland.” Arena’s personal focus is on getting young people into education and training. As someone who has benefitted by coming through the university system she believes it is the right of all young people to not necessarily go to university but to gain apprenticeships or other qualifications and pathways

into work. “The big thing I’m excited about is Labour’s plan to put all under 20 year olds into education training or work. It’s a $182 million package but guarantees, for instance, that 9000 young people who would otherwise be on the benefit will be given places in businesses willing to take them on as apprentices in exchange for what they would be paid on the dole.” The big issue for the country at this election, says Arena, is that of trust. “People are looking for a government they can trust. In the last term we’ve seen unparalleled financial unrest in our economy and to deal with that we need a government that acts on its word and whose ministers can be trusted. People really want to know they can trust their politicians.” Regardless of the outcome of the election in Hunua, anyone who spends time with Arena comes away with a strong impression that this is a young woman with a huge future in politics. You read it here

It was a trip down memory lane for Dunedin North MP David Clark (left) when he and Hunua Labour election candidate Arena Williams (right) went on a hand-shaking expedition down the main street of Beachlands last week. David lived in Beachlands for 16 years and his mum, Faye, still lives here. He recalls attending Beachlands School when there was a roll of less than 200 students. He and Arena visited the school while in Beachlands. “The school has transformed but the kids are so proud and well adjusted. You get a sense of a really good feeling in the school,” says David. David moved to Dunedin from Beachlands to study at Otago University and ended up staying. He became a Minister of Religion (and is still a Presbyterian minister) and worked at a parish in Newmarket before completing a Ph.d in Dunedin, He then worked for Treasury in Wellington. He returned to Dunedin to run Selwyn College, his old halls of residence. “I would still be doing that if I hadn’t thrown my hat in the ring when Pete Hodgson retired – sooner than I was expecting.”

Switzerland is a country that crops up a lot in conversation with New Zealand First’s Hunua candidate, Jon Reeves. He lived there – as well as other parts of Europe – during his time as a business headhunter, an aircraft buyer/seller and route planner, and with the oil and watch making industries. These days he’s an account manager with Radio Networks. The Swiss are a sensible lot... and NZ First is the party of “common sense”, as Jon reminded the Beachlands Hall audience at frequent intervals during a recent meet the candidates evening. Take land ownership, for example. “The Swiss don’t do it [let foreigners buy up land]. You have to live there for five consecu-

tive years before getting a permit to allow you to buy land,” says Jon. “Switzerland is a very nationalistic country. They don’t make it easy for foreigners to own property and as a result the value of houses rises just 1-2% a year. “We’ve got to stop wholesale land sales to overseas interests – people who never live here, whether they are from Shanghai or Paris. This is not in the interests of New Zealand. “It means there are lots of people I know in their 30s who can’t afford to buy here because they are bidding against people in Shanghai who are on the telephone. “You and I are being stung with high interest rates and will become second class citizens in our own country. “You can’t go to China

and buy a property – you can lease it but not buy it. We have got to stop selling our land.” The sale of land to overseas interests is a top priority election issue, says Jon. But Jon’s personal passion is campaigning for better public transport, an area in which he has considerable expertise. “I chose [to stand in Hunua] because I have been involved with the Campaign for Better Public Transport lobby as a committee member. “I ran the campaign for Waikato commuter trains and as a result spent lot of time in Pukekohe, Paerata and surrounding areas. “I got to know the area well and I know the problems with public transport this whole electorate has. “Beachlands-Maraetai has, Clevedon has, Pukekohe semi-has, and Waiuku is worse off than you are!” Jon speaks with the confidence that comes with experience and is convinced he and NZ First

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters (left) was in the Hunua Electorate last Sunday. He and Hunua candidate Jon Reeves (right) visited the Clevedon Village Farmers Market, Glenbrook Vintage Railway, did a speech at the Kentish Hotel in Waiuku, then visited a retirement village and hospital in Waiuku. The highlight was the “Winston Express” steam train which they caught from Pukoware into Waiuku. can solve the problems. “It is a fundamental issue. If you live out here you are solely dependent on cars. “I had a good discussion with the Managing Director of Sealink [owner of the Pine Harbour ferries] discussing issues here.

“I realise Andrew Bayly [National’s Hunua candidate] has also talked to Sealink but he never analysed it. The New Zealand Transport Agency has to come to the party to fund the service. The NZTA is the Government and this • TO PAGE 9

scrap it. But heaps have now become criminalised as a result of it.” Neville is appalled by child abuse, but he says the reality is that since the anti smacking law has been in place, child abuse has actually gone up by up 34% so clearly the legislation isn’t working. He was “super impressed” with the new Conservative Party that formed just five weeks before the last election and still got 2.6% of votes. “We believe we’ll get 6-8% this time. We have work to do but it’s a target that’s achievable.” Neville is General Manager of Bowden Storage and Distribution based in Mt Wellington – a third

Neville Hudson. party logistics company providing warehousing and distribution services. Previously he spent nearly 21 years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, helped start the courier company CourierPost, worked for Dick Smith Electronics as a store manager, then Movements International as a branch manager,

and for several trucking and warehouse companies in various roles. He is a member of the Pokeno Community Group and invited member of the Tuakau Community Board. He is married to Karen and the couple have four grown-up children. So why Hunua? “I don’t do anything

Hunua needs better public transport • FROM PAGE 8 Government is holding the purse strings closed for public transport but completely wide open for roading projects all around the countryside. “Towns like yours are being left behind.” The solution, says Jon, is a better bus network, shuttle buses from Beachlands and Maraetai to the Pine Harbour ferries; hourly or half hourly buses to Botany, East Tamaki and Manukau train station so everyone here can link with the rail network or airport bus service. And once again Switzerland crops up. “Switzerland is a public transport utopia. They have learnt a lot about how to get small towns integrated.”

NZ First, says Jon, has a public transport policy “of which even the Greens might be envious!” Education is also a big issue, he says. “The current Government has turned it into a money making exercise with charter schools. I firmly believe it’s not about making a profit for your mates; it’s about education, and we need to concentrate on that.” Jon also wants to see the Hunua electorate get more of a say in Auckland Council. “The way it was constructed by Act and National isn’t advantageous for people in Hunua. There needs to be a review and it needs to be more democratic so our electorate has more of a say.” Because, says Jon, “it’s common sense.”

“You have to do the same in BeachlandsMaraetai. You have got a good group to do that [the PCCA] and you must lobby council direct.” The Conservative Party has four main election policies, with the bottom line being the introduction of binding referendums. “There have been five referendums that have been ignored. “If we can give power to the people then anything is possible for this country. If people are in control, things will change for the better. It will change the face of government and things will get done. Other key policies are:

• first $20,000 of earnings tax free, then a flat tax after that. • justice for the victims of burglaries • equal rights and representation for all One policy that’s not in the four, but which Neville is particularly keen to pursue is a review of the Auckland Super City. “With the Auckland Super City we were promised efficiencies and savings. Most people I speak to can’t seem to point to anything. “We will call for a review to see if it has met the promises we were told. We don’t believe it has. If that’s the case, then we will ask people if they want to get rid of it or keep it.”

AN EPIC COMMUNITY EVENT: COMING THIS SATURDAY…

Hunua Conservative Party candidate Neville Hudson comes to you courtesy of the antismacking legislation. The Pokeno resident was a strong National Party supporter but became angry when prior to an election John Key said he would not support moving Sue Bradford’s anti smacking bill under urgency, yet supported it once elected. “Within weeks of being elected he pushed the legislation through,. That was not what he said he was going to do – 92% of people said in a referendum that they didn’t want it. “He also said if any family becomes criminalised because of light smacking, he would

in Waikato. I live and work in the Auckland area, shop in Pukekohe. My playground has been Maraetai and Omana Park. It’s the area I know and am comfortable with,” says Neville. He says there’s a big difference in what he is hearing from Hunua voters in the built up areas when compared with those in Hunua’s rural areas. The towns are concerned with poor public transport, council and growth issues. In the rural areas farmers are concerned about the Emissions Trading Scheme which he says is costing some as much as $20,000 a year with nothing to show for it. In Beachlands-Maraetai growth and development is a big talking point, he says. “Pokeno has gone through this. We formed a community group and worked with council as to what we believed Pokeno needed. We can’t stop the development but we want a say in how it looks. When there is a problem, we talk to council about it. We don’t win every battle but if we don’t try we won’t win any.
